Highlighted car: 2022 Porsche 911 'Sally'

By: RM Sotheby's

Our contributor John Phillips added 'Sally' to our database, a one-off Porsche 911 that will be auctioned by RM Sotheby's during the Monterey Car Week 2022.

During the Monterey Car week 2022 RM Sotheby's will auction the 911 Sally Special to benefit charitable causes. This one-off car marks a unique collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios, Style Porsche in Weissach Porsche’s Sonderwunsch team in Zuffenhausen and Porsche Cars North America. The creative process to specify the car was structured in a Co-Creation process that Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur recently launched as the Sonderwunsch program.

The 911 Sally Special is based on the most powerful, engaging and exciting model of the 911 Carrera range, the 911 Carrera GTS – made for people who love to drive, just as Sally Carrera does. Developing 473 hp from a twin-turbo boxer engine which emits a melodious flat-six note through the standard Sport Exhaust System, the 911 Sally Special is ready to tackle the road. Fitting for an enthusiast-focused car, the engine is paired with a seven-speed manual transmission. Furthermore, the model is enhanced from the factory with several options that make driving even more practical and enjoyable. These include the Premium Package and a front axle lift system, which provides extended ground clearance to clear speed bumps and steep driveways and also features a GPS-based memory function to store frequently visited areas that require the lift to be used. Rear-axle steering further enhances the steering and handling agility of the 911 Sally Special, while the 23.7 gallon extended range fuel tank, BOSE Surround Sound System and 18-way adjustable Sport Seats Plus make the car suitable for even the most extensive of road trips.

The most notable exterior feature is the paint color Sally Blue Metallic, which is offered exclusively for the 911 Sally Special and inspired by the character. Adding to this striking hue, the elements of the Sport Design front and rear fascia – usually kept in black – are also painted in Sally Blue Metallic, as are the rear engine lid and surroundings. Porsche lettering in shimmering Alushine and a 996-generation style “Carrera” designation at the rear add to the one-of-one appearance of the 911 Sally Special. Rounding off the one-of-a-kind 911 is the set of 911 Turbo (996) design wheels that were created exclusively for this car. The “Turbo” inspired wheels fitted to Sally Carrera have been redesigned by Style Porsche designers in Weissach and created specifically for the 911 Sally Special. The five-spoke design have been subtly modified to match the 20/21-inch diameter of current-generation 911 wheels, but remain true to the 996 Porsche. These completely unique wheels are only intended to be fitted to this one car. Rounding off the extensive list of exterior enhancements are LED Matrix design headlights with full silver surrounds, which are exclusive to the 911 Sally Special.

The interior is equally stunning, as almost every surface inside the car has been refined or changed by the Sonderwunsch Manufaktur team. It is centered around the Chalk leather and Speed Blue and Chalk stitching, along with Pepita seat inserts in a combination of Black, Chalk and Speed Blue. The lower part of the dashboard features deviating leather in Chalk, and the front seat backs are also covered in Chalk leather and Speed Blue stitching. Crossover stitching in Speed Blue and Chalk adorns the upper part of the dashboard, door panels and rear side panels and is only available via the Sonderwunsch Factory Commissioning program. Continuing this theme, shift lever of the seven-speed manual transmission has a Speed Blue gear pattern scheme – another unique feature of the Sally Special. The carpet of the vehicle is made of Slate Grey material, adding to the special color tone. Opening the doors, passengers are greeted by customized milled door sill guards with a Sally Special emblem illuminated and a Sport Steering wheel with a 12 o’clock marker in Speed Blue, which also carries a Sport Response button that has been relabeled “Kachow mode”. The interior trim is painted in Sally Blue Metallic, bringing the unique hue of the exterior to the inside of the car. Even special details such as the leather binder for the owner’s manual and the key set (painted in Sally Blue, of course) has been adorned with special “Sally” lettering paying tribute to the inspirational film character. A special printing on the dashboard above the glove compartment signifies this car as true one-of-one vehicle.

Sally Carrera is featured in each of the three Cars movies, as the girlfriend of main character, Lightning McQueen and proud proprietor of the Cozy Cone Motel in fictional Radiator Springs. Like Sally Carrera’s kind, compassionate and giving character, this road-going interpretation will benefit charitable causes, with 100% of proceeds, excluding taxes and fees, going towards two worthy charities. Beneficieries include Girls Inc., supporting life-changing programs for girls and young women, and USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, providing aid to children and their families affected by the war in Ukraine.

Finished by hand by the Sonderwunsch team in Zuffenhausen and signed underneath the front hood (i.e. “frunk”) by many from the project team at Porsche and Pixar, the 911 Sally Special will be accompanied by many one-of-a-kind auction items underlining unique nature of the project. It starts with a timepiece of which only one will be made, created by Porsche Design in collaboration with Pixar. As a suitable contrast to the natural titanium of the watch and a perfect match for the vehicle, the colored ring on the dial is painted in Sally Blue Metallic. The chalk-colored leather strap with decorative stitching in Speed Blue underlines the sporty design of the Cars-inspired one-of-a-kind item. This strap can be exchanged quickly and without tools for an additional, second leather strap in Speed Blue with decorative stitching in chalk if desired. A closer look at the chronograph reveals limited-edition numbering 001/001 to match the vehicle on the case back – mirroring the attention to detail exhibited on the car itself. The chronograph is powered by the COSC-certified Porsche Design chronograph caliber WERK 01.100, which was developed at Porsche Design Timepieces AG, Porsche Design’s own watch Manufaktur in Solothurn, and designed and manufactured with Swiss craftsmanship.

In addition, the car is accompanied by a second set of wheels in the ‘Carrera Exclusive’ design – mounted on a custom made rack – intended for track use, should the owner wish to fully exploit the performance of the car. Supporting this is an array of smaller, items created during the development of the 911 Sally Special. These include bespoke indoor car cover made by Porsche Tequipment, the original color molds used to finalize the paint for the car, the show plates for the car, a very special book charting the design and development of the car with images of its construction and original sketches by Porsche designer Suichi Yamashita, and Pixar’s Cars Production Designer Bob Pauley. As with many elements of the project, only one book will be made.

Finished by hand at Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur in Zuffenhausen, the “911 Sally Special” is a truly exclusive offering not to be missed, with proceeds benefiting deserving causes.
